This article explores the history and present scenario of Tamilians who entered Malaysia during the colonial period. At present, the Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) in Malaysia constitute about 6.5% of the country’s population, making Malaysian Indians the third largest ethnic community in Malaysia. The British Kangani system was an entry point for Tamilians. While a few of the community members have attained good educational levels, giving rise to the middle class, the majority of them still remain as working labourers. This article adopts a qualitative review-based approach and focuses on the period from 1957 to 2024. The year 1957 has been selected as the starting point because it marks the independence of Malaya and the emergence of new political, economic, and social structures that shaped the experiences of ethnic minorities.
While the colonial migration of Tamil labourers is discussed as historical background, the present condition of Malaysian Tamils cannot be understood by studying migration history or marginalisation separately. The findings suggest that the historical origins of the Tamil community as a labour diaspora continue to shape its contemporary socio-economic and political position in Malaysia. Despite some degree of educational and occupational mobility, a significant section of the community remains concentrated in lower socio-economic strata and experiences political under-representation and persistent social stereotyping. By bringing together Robin Cohen’s concept of labour diaspora and Gopal Guru’s theory of marginalisation, the study demonstrates how historical labour recruitment structures have contributed to enduring forms of exclusion in post-independence Malaysia. The analysis further argues that cultural and religious practices such as Thaipusam and Aadi Pooram function not only as expressions of cultural continuity but also as mechanisms through which a historically marginalised diaspora asserts identity, solidarity, and visibility within a multi-ethnic society like Malaysia. The study contributes to scholarship on diaspora and marginalisation by highlighting the interconnected relationship between labour origins, socio-political exclusion, and cultural identity formation among Malaysian Tamils.
