Abstract

The relationship between India and Ethiopia represents one of the oldest and most enduring connections between India and Africa, with historical linkages dating back nearly 2,000 years. Early maritime trade across the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean facilitated commercial and cultural exchanges. It laid foundation for a long-standing partnership. A more permanent Indian presence emerged during the latter half of the nineteenth century when merchants, artisans, and skilled professionals, predominantly from the Gujarati-speaking regions of India, settled in Ethiopia. Unlike many other Indian communities in Africa that arrived through indenture, migration to Ethiopia was largely voluntary and driven by trade and entrepreneurship. Over time, the Indian diaspora became an integral part of Ethiopian society, contributing significantly to commerce, education, healthcare, and small-scale industries. The community has earned widespread respect and goodwill for its constructive role in Ethiopia’s socio-economic development. Indian cultural influence is also evident through cuisine, business practices, and the enduring popularity of Bollywood films. This has served as an important medium of cultural exchange between the two countries.

One of the most notable contributions of the Indian diaspora has been in the field of education. Ethiopia’s rapid expansion of secondary and higher education created a substantial demand for qualified academic professionals, a need that was met by thousands of Indian teachers, lecturers, and professors. Serving in universities and schools across both urban and rural regions, these educators have played a pivotal role in developing Ethiopia’s human capital. Their commitment to teaching and mentoring has left a lasting impact on generations of Ethiopian students and strengthened the people-to-people ties between the two nations. This chapter examines the historical evolution of the Indian community in Ethiopia, highlighting its economic, educational, and cultural contributions, yet assessing its role in deepening bilateral relations and fostering one of Africa’s most respected Indian diaspora communities.
